    Product Information

    SW-Motech Aluminum Engine Guard/Skidplate for DL650 V-Strom 12

    New design with a 4mm-thick baseplate and 3mm-thick sideplates overlap at the seams to provide 7mm-thick rails on the outer edges of the skidplate for added strength and stability. Two-tone black and aluminum finish.

    The SW-MOTECH skidplate can be used with:
    - Suzuki or SW-MOTECH centerstands;
    - Suzuki or SW-MOTECH crashbars

    Front mounting bracket connects directly to the motorcycle without the need to connect to a crashbar. Recessed rear mounting bracket prevents damage to screw heads when sliding over rocks. Front and rear connection points are rubber mounted to reduce vibration, which lowers noise and the possibility of fracturing the skidplate. The shock absorbing mounting points can be inexpensively replaced if damaged.

    The skidplate has a pre-drilled hole in the bottom so that the oil drain plug bolt can be accessed without removing the skidplate. This allows the oil to be changed without removing the skidplate.

    To change the oil filter, the skidplate must be removed. This can be achieved by removing four bolts from the bottom of the skidplate and four additional bolts from the front end of the skidplate. The four skidplate mounting brackets can remain attached to the motorcycle. The process of removing and reattaching the skidplate from these points should add no more than 10 minutes to an oil filter change.

      Pros: I was immediately impressed when I opened the box and inventoried the bits and pieces that make up the SW-Motech aluiminum
      skidplate. The plate looked sturdy and is very well designed. I started what should have been a one-hour installation yesterday and finished it today. No problems with SW-Motech but a real struggle with the V-Strom. To install this item, you need to remove the two large bolts that secure the kickstand. The instructions just say, remove bolts; not so easy. These bolts are secured with Locktite red (or perhaps JB-weld). They were impossible to remove until I did a little research and found out that heat is needed to loosen the bolts. If you are attempting this rather straight-forward install yourself, use a heat gun aimed at the head of the bolt for a good five minutes per bolt. Then you will need an impact wrench or, in my case, I used a 17mm box wrench and wacked on it with a plastic faced hammer. This extra ten minutes of applying heat will save you a great deal of frustration and scraped knuckles. One other word of caution, don't use a rear axel stand as I did; strap the bike down with tie downs so that it is completely stable. The wrestling with the kickstand bolts could (did) rock the bike off the stand. Now that the installation is complete, I must say I like the look of the bike much better and I am much more confident that the oil filter will be safe from frontal impact. Great piece!
      Cons: I wish the instructions for this bike were a little more complete. A sentence regarding the application of heat to the kickstand bolts would have been nice, along with a warning for knuckle heads like me to secure the bike with straps before starting the installation.
      Overall I would score this installation as follows:

      Parts & pieces - A+
      Instructions - C+
      Installer - C-

      That said, all's well that ends well, and this ended very well. This is the best farkle I've installed in a long time.
